About Workers’ Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC)

The WSCC is an arm's length government agency responsible for administering the Workers' Compensation Acts, Safety Acts, Explosives Use Acts and the Mine Health and Safety Acts.

Together, with their partners, the WSCC provides services to almost 40,000 workers and 4,000 employers across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, processes over 3,000 claims annually, and conducts over 1,000 inspections annually to ensure the safety of northern workplaces. The WSCC is unique in Canada as it is the only workers' compensation organization in the country to insure workers across more than one province or territory.

About the Opportunity

WSCC is looking for a full-time Safety Officer based in Iqaluit, NU. Occasional duty travel to other Northern communities and throughout Canada is required.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Safety Officer, this role is responsible for promoting workplace health and safety across Nunavut by conducting inspections, investigations, and compliance activities in accordance with territorial legislation. As an appointed Safety Officer under the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Safety Acts, you will provide guidance to employers and workers while helping prevent workplace injuries and illnesses through education, enforcement, and proactive engagement.

More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting worksite inspections to assess compliance with occupational health and safety legislation
  • Reviewing and evaluating Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) programs and workplace practices
  • Investigating dangerous occurrences, serious injuries, fatalities, work refusals, and discrimination claims
  • Enforcing applicable Safety Acts, Regulations, and related legislation as an appointed Safety Officer
  • Educating employers, workers, and the public on workplace health and safety requirements
  • Promoting the internal responsibility system through effective communication and relationship building
  • Identifying emerging workplace health and safety trends and recommending awareness initiatives
  • Preparing reports, assessments, and recommendations based on inspection and investigation findings
  • Travelling throughout Nunavut to conduct inspections and ensure legislative compliance
  • Providing guidance and support to employers on hazard identification, risk mitigation, and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborating with other WSCC divisions to promote workplace health and safety initiatives

About You

To qualify, you will need a certificate or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety from an accredited educational institution and a valid Class 5 driver's licence. A minimum of 3 years of experience in occupational health and safety, including conducting workplace inspections and investigations, will also be essential.

Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:

  • Strong knowledge of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut Safety Acts, associated regulations, and occupational health and safety legislation
  • Experience conducting workplace investigations and preparing clear, evidence-based findings
  • Ability to assess workplace hazards, evaluate OHS programs, and make sound compliance decisions
  • CRSP designation or progress toward certification
  • Experience working in industries such as construction, education, corrections, or other safety-focused environments
  • Bilingual in French and English
