About the Opportunity

The Day & Ross Transportation Group is currently seeking an experienced Operations Manager to join our General Freight division in Montreal on a full-time basis. 

Reporting to the Terminal Manager, the Operations Manager oversees multiple shifts at the Montreal terminal - the second biggest in Canada. 

Fluent in French and English and knowledgeable of LTL, TL and cross dock operations, the Operations Manager is responsible for leading the Operations team and effectively planning, scheduling and overseeing multiple shifts in a busy, high-volume LTL dock operation.

Capable of supporting a team of over 30 direct reports and responsibly managing budgets, you will maintain open lines of communication with all terminal personnel, as well as identify and implement ways to optimize service, productivity, and safety standards to ensure stakeholder expectations are met.

Key accountabilities include: 

  • Leading and managing a fast-paced and high-volume LTL dock operation through a team of supervisors, lead hands, and front line employees
  • Coaching and developing team members using a positive attitude, collaboration, clear communication, and direction
  • Making informed decisions on safety, service, and productivity standards, with an understanding of company processes, policies, and procedures
  • Initiating and leading processes and customer experience improvements, while meeting deadlines and controlling costs
  • Understanding and using key metrics to manage terminal performance, including load factor, on-time delivery, LMS, and freight flow
  • Recognizing problems and working with others towards a practical and speedy resolution
  • Performing other related duties, as required

The Successful Candidate

To qualify for this role, you will have previous operational experience working in a terminal or transportation setting, as well as managing a team of front-line supervisors. A relevant post-secondary education is an asset, but an acceptable combination of experience, skills, and training will also be considered. 

Fluency in both French and English is essential for success in this role, as is the ability to work a flexible and adaptable schedule to support various shifts and freight volumes in a 24/7 environment.

In addition, the successful candidate will also demonstrate: 

  • Experience managing department budgets and cost control 
  • Proficiency with computers, including MS Office, AS400, and web-based programs
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, as well as the ability to prepare and interpret data and reports 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening and conflict resolution 
  • Proven ability to build and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders
